Manga Review: Attack on Titan Vol. 1

Attack on Titan, Vol. 1 (Attack on Titan #1)
Author: Hajime Isayama
Translator: Sheldon Drzka
Genres: Dystopia, horror, fantasy, action, manga

Goodreads Synopsis: In this post-apocalytpic sci-fi story, humanity has been devastated by the bizarre, giant humanoids known as the Titans. Little is known about where they came from or why they are bent on consuming mankind. Seemingly unintelligent, they have roamed the world for years, killing everyone they see. For the past century, what’s left of man has hidden in a giant, three-walled city. People believe their 100-meter-high walls will protect them from the Titans, but the sudden appearance of an immense Titan is about to change everything.

I watched the anime series and loved it so much I had to get my hands on the manga. So far, it’s just as good as the anime!

Volume 1 is from the perspective of Eren, his best friend Armin, and his adoptive sister Mikasa. The Colossal Titan breaks the wall, making rubble fly everywhere. Eren runs back to his house to find his mother crushed beneath rubble, and a Titan is approaching. The Captain of the Garrison Regiment, Hannes comes to help, ends up saving Eren and Mikasa. Eren watches as his mother is consumed by the Titan. Eren then makes the promise to kill every last Titan.

Five years later, Eren, Armin and Mikasa have graduated from military training… And suddenly The Colossal Titan appears again and destroys the wall. Titans enter, more lives are lost, and this volume ends with Eren saving Armin from a Titan and being eaten.

Such a dark and gripping story. I can’t get enough!

  1. I love the anime! It’s really smart and action-packed. I haven’t read the manga yet bc it’s so expensive haha
