In this world there are three types of vampires.
- Dhampir: Human-vampire hybrids, usually protectors of the Moroi.
- Moroi: Full blood vampires with magic over an element (fire, water, air, earth, etc). Can go in the sunlight and can survive off of more than blood.
- Strigoi: The immortal bad vampires who live off blood. Humans, Dhampirs, and Moroi can be turned into Strigoi. It’s just like regular vampirism. You must have your blood drank and drink blood in return, willingly or forced.
Dhampirs cannot reproduce with other Dhampirs, but they can reproduce with Moroi. A Dhampir and a Moroi make a Dhampir, and Moroi and a Moroi make another Moroi, and a human and a Moroi make a Dhampir… I think I got that right? Haha. It’s kind of confusing.
Moroi have twelve royal families: Badica, Conta, Dashkov,Dragomir, Drozdov, Ivashkov, Lazar, Ozera, Tarus, Szelsky, Voda, Zeklos. The Dragomirs and Ozeras were once very powerful families until most of the Dragomirs died, and the Ozeras were shunned after two of their members willingly became Strigoi.
So the story. Vampire Academy is about two best friends, Rose Hathaway and Lissa Dragomir. Rose is a Dhampir, and Lissa is not only a Moroi, but a princess.
In the first book, Rose and Lissa fled the academy to live among humans (why that is is a minor spoiler, I think? It’s been 5+ years since I read the first book). After two years, super foxy Russian guardian Dimitri Belikov finds them and brings them back. After returning to the academy, the headmistress wants to expel Rose for kidnapping Lissa, Dimitri talks her into letting Rose stay and begins training her so she can become a better guardian.
Rose starts to develop a crush on Dimitri and Lissa befriends Christian Ozera, who is a bit of a social outcast. Lissa starts to become depressed, and another Moroi named Mia starts spreading hateful rumors about her. Strange things happen, Lissa is kidnapped, and Rose finds her with their special bond.
The first book is a bit immature, there is quite a bit of high school drama that may turn a lot of people off. If you push through the first book the story really unfolds. It is unlike any vampire series I’ve ever read.
It’s really hard to describe the rest of the series without spoiling anything. There is lots of action and romance. I didn’t find this series cliché and the romance didn’t annoy me one bit. The love story doesn’t take center stage, but it is surprisingly steamy for a YA series.
Rose has such a strong personality. If you asked me who my favourite non-Harry Potter heroine was, I’d instantly say Rose. She’s such a hilarious and sarcastic character, not to mention a total badass. Her one flaw is that she’s impulsive and doesn’t really think things through.
I really loved all the characters. They’re so well-developed and interesting. Books five and six weren’t that great (perhaps it was my mood at the time) but they wrapped up the series up nicely and set things up for the spinoff series, Bloodlines.
So the movie, Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters. I liked it. I thought it was cute and funny. I wish they’d make a second one. I need Adrian Ivashkov like I need oxygen.
