Goodreads Synopsis: Prince Aleksander, would-be heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, is on the run. His own people have turned on him. His title is worthless. All he has is a battletorn war machine and a loyal crew of men.
Deryn Sharp is a commoner, disguised as a boy in the British Air Service. She’s a brilliant airman. But her secret is in constant danger of being discovered.
With World War I brewing, Alek and Deryn’s paths cross in the most unexpected way…taking them on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure that will change both their lives forever.
I read these in the first two weeks of August back in 2013, so my memory is a little fuzzy.
The Germans are called Clankers and have advanced machinery (it reminds me of Wild Wild West a bit). The British are called Darwinists, they have crossbred animals. One of their weapons is the Leviathan, a flying whale ship. Yes, whale as in a living, breathing creature. It’s such a unique idea, I loved it.
There is tons of suspense and action. Even a little romance. The only downside? The ending, like most of Scott Westerfeld’s books, ends with a cliffhanger. If you’ve never read steampunk before, this is an excellent place to start.
