Goodreads: Sometimes discovering the truth can leave you more hopeless than believing the lies…
That’s what seventeen-year-old Sky realizes after she meets Dean Holder. A guy with a reputation that rivals her own and an uncanny ability to invoke feelings in her she’s never had before. He terrifies her and captivates her all in the span of just one encounter, and something about the way he makes her feel sparks buried memories from a past that she wishes could just stay buried.
Sky struggles to keep him at a distance knowing he’s nothing but trouble, but Holder insists on learning everything about her. After finally caving to his unwavering pursuit, Sky soon finds that Holder isn’t at all who he’s been claiming to be. When the secrets he’s been keeping are finally revealed, every single facet of Sky’s life will change forever.
I hate it when I’m the odd man out. I couldn’t emotionally connect to this book because it was overly dramatic. Plus the beginning part with Holder really upset me.
Sky has lived a majority of her life without technology. She doesn’t have a television, a cell phone, or a computer. She has also been home schooled her whole life. The only friend in her life is her next door neighbor, Six.
Sky and Six let boys sneak into their rooms at night to make out. Because of this, Sky has a bad reputation. When she convinces her adoptive mom into letting her attend public school she does get bullied because of it, but unlike most people, Sky doesn’t get upset over it.
Until Sky meets Holder, she doesn’t feel anything when she kisses a boy (or a girl, she kissed Six to see if she was gay). She just lays on her bed counting the stars on her ceiling.
One day, Sky goes to the store and sees a gorgeous guy glaring at her. That guy is Holder. Feeling uneasy, she leaves the store and heads towards her car. What does Holder do? He follows her and demands she tell him her name because he thinks he knows her. Being a massive idiot, Sky shows him her ID. Great move.
Later she goes running, stops to catch her breath and here comes Holder-Sky had stopped in front of his house. Sky is out of water, so Holder offers her some and she takes it without question. My mind was screaming, “DATE RAPE!”
They start to chat while she’s catching her breath, she says she only has a mile or so left and he corrects her saying two miles, I think it was? He then goes inside to his house and fills up her water bottle. I was getting so many red flags… How can someone be so stupid?! Fortunately for Sky, Holder wasn’t a rapist or serial killer, he was just creepy… Holder runs back to Sky’s house with her and she faints.
Sky and Holder start to become friends, but Holder has constant mood swings, so Sky never knows which version of him she’ll see…
Why did Holder think Sky looked familiar? What causes his mood swings? Why won’t Sky’s mom let her use technology? Why doesn’t Sky remember or know anything about before she was adopted? All of those are spoilers, and to find that out you either need to read the book or look at the spoilers under the cut.
(highlight to see them, they’re in white font)
