Number the Stars by Lois Lowry

Goodreads: Ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her best friend Ellen Rosen often think of life before the war. It’s now 1943 and their life in Copenhagen is filled with school, food shortages, and the Nazi soldiers marching through town. When the Jews of Denmark are “relocated”. Ellen moves in with the Johansens and pretends to be one of the family. Soon Annemarie is asked to go on a dangerous mission to save Ellen’s life.

Number the Stars is about a family who helps their Jewish friends escape to Sweden. I first read this in fourth grade, back in 2001/2002, around Annemarie’s age. It’s the perfect book to give children to introduce them to the Holocaust.

  1. I read Number the Stars in 5th grade. I’m looking forward to when my children get a chance to read it. My oldest two are in second grade. They are interested in learning about the Holocaust, but I’m going to wait a little longer before giving them this book. So far, they’ve read a picture book that addresses the Nazi occupation of France, but nothing else on this subject.
