The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson

Goodreads: Once, a hero arose to save the world. A young man with a mysterious heritage courageously challenged the darkness that strangled the land.

He failed.

For a thousand years since, the world has been a wasteland of ash and mist ruled by the immortal emperor known as the Lord Ruler. Every revolt has failed miserably.

Yet somehow, hope survives. Hope that dares to dream of ending the empire and even the Lord Ruler himself. A new kind of uprising is being planned, one built around the ultimate caper, one that depends on the cunning of a brilliant criminal mastermind and the determination of an unlikely heroine, a street urchin who must learn to master Allomancy, the power of a Mistborn.

This was so good! Such a rollercoaster of emotions. The only thing I really didn’t get was the magic system. Allomancy gives you special powers by ingesting certain metals. To me it was a bit strange, but it started to grow on me. I also wasn’t a fan of the ball scenes, but they were vital to the story.

In this world, there are Mistings, and Mistborn. Mistings can control one Allomantic skill/metal, and Mistborn can control all metals. Not all people have these abilities though, only those with noble blood.

The characters in this book were so fun and different, I really enjoyed their friendship and sense of humor. There was so much character development, especially with Vin. Vin is a really strong and smart female lead, which is hard to find these days. Kelsier definitely took the spotlight and was my favourite character.

There’s great world building, and the plot had lots of twists. There’s also a little bit of romance, which I was actually took me by surprise, but I really enjoyed reading about it.

I really don’t know how to explain anything else without potential spoilers. So if you like fantasy and great characters, read this now!

I feel a bit on the fence with Mistborn! Still need to write my review on it. Heard so many great things about it but found it a lot to take in (since I don’t read much epic fantasy) and wasn’t quite understanding the magic system either – it did grow on me eventually though. I’m currently reading the second book atm, I hope that I’ll understand it a bit more!

Glad to see you enjoy the book! I kinda liked the ball scenes. I think they show Vin in a different light, and it led to the awesome scene when she met Elend. Hope to see your opinions on the sequels!
