Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas

GoodreadsThe long path to the throne has only just begun for Aelin Galathynius. Loyalties have been broken and bought, friends have been lost and gained, and those who possess magic find themselves at odds with those don’t.

As the kingdoms of Erilea fracture around her, enemies must become allies if Aelin is to keep those she loves from falling to the dark forces poised to claim her world. With war looming on all horizons, the only chance for salvation lies in a desperate quest that may mark the end of everything Aelin holds dear.

Aelin’s journey from assassin to queen has entranced millions across the globe, and this fifth installment will leave fans breathless. Will Aelin succeed in keeping her world from splintering, or will it all come crashing down?

– Abraxos
– Manon was actually likeable in this book

– No Chaol
– Insufferable “romance(s)”
– Hilarious sex scenes (bursting into flames, really?)
– Hardly anything happened
– Character personalities changing left and right

I was going to abandon ship after Queen of Shadows, but after reading and loving A Court of Thorns and Roses and A Court of Mist and Fury, and being blown away by SJM’s writing and storytelling, I decide to continue with the Throne of Glass series I once loved… and I am full of regret.

The plot is nonexistent. It’s seriously 90% lust/flirting and 10% repetitiveness reused from the previous books and ACOMAF.

There are lots of POV’s in this, and every character has their own romantic partner. The “romance” is just lust. The sex scenes make this new adult, not young adult, so be wary of that if that sort of thing bothers you.

I ship no one, not anymore. I want them all to die. (Please don’t attack me for saying that. I still have all my death threats from my negative Queen of Shadows review. Haha.)

I’m really upset with how much the characters have changed and how this series has turned into nothing but sex. I can’t put my frustration into words, just… AHHH! *grabs hair and pulls*

The series ranked:
1) Crown of Midnight
2) Throne of Glass
3) Heir of Fire
4) Empire of Storms
5) Queen of Shadows

I think the reason why the story changed so much is because SJM originally wrote the first book when she was 17 or so, and she’s 30 now.
