Gritty and Graceful: 15 Inspiring Women of the Bible was written by Caryn Rivadeneira, and illustrated by Sonya Abby Soekarno. Caryn Rivadeneira is the author of eleven books, and a member of INK: A Creative Collective and the Society of Children’s Books and Illustrators. Sonya Abby Soekarno is an illustrator and visual development artist from Indonesia, and currently based in San Francisco
The women featured are Eve, Hagar (who I feel is often overlooked, even though she plays an important part), Miriam (as a child), Rahab, Deborah, Hannah, Naomi and Ruth, Esther, Mary (mother of Jesus), Mary and Martha, the woman at the well, the bleeding woman, and Mary Magdalene.
Each woman has a brief but detailed story about what she is known for. I absolutely love how this book includes the woman at the well and the bleeding woman! This is an empowering and must-read book that needs to be in every home, Christian school and church library.
Here’s an excerpt:
“I am Deborah
I was a prophet, a judge, a poet— and a warrior. One day, enemies threatened God’s people. Our top soldier Barak was too afraid to fight them. But I wasn’t afraid— I was read. I lead 10,000 soldiers into battle that day. I told the soldiers that a woman would win this battle and that God would deliver us. And because of my bravery and God’s help, that’s exactly what happened.
God did great things for me— and I did great things for God.
Verse: ‘Certainly I will go with you’ said Deborah. ‘But because of the course you are taking, the honor will not be yours, for the LORD will deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman.’ Judges 4:9″
