Books I Read Because of the Online Book Community

thekissofdeception

The Kiss of Deception (The Remnant Chronicles #1) by Mary E. Pearson
This is a YA fantasy dystopia that focuses a lot on romance. This trilogy was on booklr a lot. I’m not going to lie, I only read this book because of the cover.

thewinnerscurse

The Winner’s Curse (The Winner’s Trilogy) by Marie Rutkoski
This is YA fantasy about a girl who falls in love with a slave, who is undercover to start an uprising. I used to see this trilogy lot on Booklr, and once I started seeing people say “Don’t read this trilogy because it’s problematic!” posts everywhere, I did the opposite and read the first book.

hopeless

Hopeless by Colleen Hoover
Colleen Hoover is a New Adult romance author. Hopeless is her most popular book to date. Her books are pretty popular amongst romance readers.

allthebrightplaces

All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
This is a YA romance dealing with depression and suicide. When this first came out it was compared to The Fault in Our Stars (one of my favourite books) and Eleanor & Park (one of my most hated books). Since I kept seeing it everywhere, I needed to find out for myself if it was worth the hype.

MPHFPC

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children By Ransom Riggs
This is a pretty popular YA paranormal book that has been around for a while, and is always brought up around Halloween.

Books I Had a Hard Time Reading

And I Darken by Kiersten White

I marked this DNF around 41%. At first, it was unique and I found the plot and setting interesting. Once the characters became teenagers, I got annoyed and started hating them.

The plot painfully slow, and I got bored, so I decided not to finish it.

AAEAAQAAAAAAAAp2AAAAJDJiMjEyOWU2LTc0NTAtNGI3YS05M2IwLWVhMWFmOTdhNGZmNQ

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

This is going to come as a shocker for a lot of you, but I didn’t like Red Rising. Merge The Hunger Games and Uglies, and put it on Mars, and you have this book. I marked this DNF around 39%.

Again, annoying characters, and slow plot.

AAEAAQAAAAAAAAp2AAAAJDJiMjEyOWU2LTc0NTAtNGI3YS05M2IwLWVhMWFmOTdhNGZmNQ

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

I love the Grisha Trilogy, but I just couldn’t get into this. I got 31% through before I couldn’t read anymore.

Interesting characters, but slow plot. I might try again someday, but it’s unlikely.

AAEAAQAAAAAAAAp2AAAAJDJiMjEyOWU2LTc0NTAtNGI3YS05M2IwLWVhMWFmOTdhNGZmNQ

The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen

The first 15% was interesting, but then I got bored with all the travelling that went on for about 30% of the book. I read 48% before the mile long descriptions started to annoy me.

I felt zero connection to any of the characters, and someone spoiled the series finale for me when I was reading this.

AAEAAQAAAAAAAAp2AAAAJDJiMjEyOWU2LTc0NTAtNGI3YS05M2IwLWVhMWFmOTdhNGZmNQ

Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

I don’t remember when I tried reading this, but I remember my mom and brother both read and loved it, so I tried reading it and couldn’t get very far into it.

I didn’t like the movie either.

AAEAAQAAAAAAAAp2AAAAJDJiMjEyOWU2LTc0NTAtNGI3YS05M2IwLWVhMWFmOTdhNGZmNQ

Now for the books I finished and had a hard time reading.

lordofshadows

I had a really hard time reading and finishing Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare. I have very little desire to pick up another one of her books (aside from The Bane Chronicles and Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy).

ACOWAR

Sarah J. Maas did an outstanding job writing ACOTAR and ACOMAF. A Court of Wings and Ruin just didn’t live up to its predecessors and bored me silly. Maas can’t write consistent character personalities at all either, and almost ruined Rhysand for me.

queenofshadows

Another SJM book I had trouble with was Queen of Shadows because I HATE what she did with the story and with all the characters.

Abundanceofkatherines

An Abundance of Katherines by John Green is probably one of the most pointless books I’ve ever read.

isla

I LOVED Anna and the French Kiss soooo much, I devoured it in one sitting. Lola and the Boy Next Door was cute. I was dying for years to get my hands on Isla and the Happily Ever After and kept waiting for Stephanie Perkins to post updates on its release. My expectations were so high and I was so disappointed.

Series I’ve Been Meaning To Start But Haven’t

rsz_recently_updated

  1. A Song of Ice and Fire is a very intimidating book series that I’m afraid to start because it’s long, and because it isn’t finished yet.
  2. My brother is a big fan of The Sword of Truth series and has been wanting me to read it for ages, but the length of both the books and the series as a whole is scary.
  3. The Kingkiller Chronicles is not only unfinished, but the books are pretty hyped and I’m afraid I’ll hate it.
  4. A Series of Unfortunate Events is a series I’ve been wanting to read since I was in middle school, but for some reason I’ve never touched a single book.
  5. The Old Kingdom series has intrigued me for years, but I forget about until I see it.
  6. The Others Series sounds so good. I have the first book on Kindle and just haven’t gotten around to it.
  7. The Wings of Fire series is a fairly long middle grade series that I’ve been waiting to wrap up so I can start it.
  8. The Falling Kingdoms series has been on my TBR for ages. I have the first book on Kindle and plan on reading it in the next year or so.
  9. A Wrinkle in Time Quintet is something I’ve been wanting to read for a long time, but again, I forget about it unless I see it.
  10. The Farseer Trilogy is the start of the Realms of the Elderlings, and the length and hype intimidates me.

What To Do If You’re Experiencing a Slump

So you are experiencing a reading slump? The first thing you need to do is acknowledge and accept that you’re in a slump, and that it’s okay NOT to read. Sometimes readers experience slumps due to feeling burned out from reading similar stories over and over again, or a story just isn’t a great as we were hoping it would be. Or maybe we recently finished a really good book and the sequel isn’t out, and nothing will ever compare.

Sometimes, we see other people reading 10+ books a month and get discouraged. Or sometimes reading feels like a chore if you’re a reviewer. Reading should never become a chore or a competition!

I’ve been in a slump for quite a while now. Here’s my advice.

  1. Play a video game.
  2. Binge watch a show. Here are some I recommend.
Comedy: The Office, Parks and Rec, Scrubs, 30 Rock, Grace and Frankie, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Bob’s Burgers, Rick and Morty, Family Guy, Mike Tyson’s Mysteries, etc.
SciFi/Fantasy: Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate, Star Trek, Heroes, Farscape, etc
Anime: Attack on Titan, Death Note, Sword Art Online, Blue Exorcist, Seven Deadly Sins, etc
  3. Learn a new hobby, or practice an old one.
  4. Listen to an audiobook.
  5. Read a graphic novel, short book, novella, or an anthology.
  6. Try reading one chapter of each book on your TBR. Whichever chapter sucks you in from the start, read that book. If nothing sucks you in then…
  7. Go back and read an old favorite book, or an anticipated sequel if you like rereading books.
  8. If you usually read speculative fiction, try something different like contemporary or historical fiction. Instead of reading YA, try juvenile fiction or adult fiction.
  9. If you’re stuck in the middle of a book you’re not enjoying, it’s okay to stop reading it.
  10. Take a break from reading for a few days/weeks/months and come back to it when it feels right.

Fandoms I’m No Longer In

e94a1e1443a0189066efae7ef55d335d92db9328

I stopped watching Supernatural after season six or seven, I think? It got repetitive and annoying. Tumblr fans also made me hate it after a while.

rsz_635885559340221523943538054_once_upon_a_time_wallpaper.jpg

I stopped watching OUAT around season four because it’s the same story with different villains every season.

Pretty Little Liars was my guilty until a few years ago. I lost interest randomly.

rsz_thewalkingdead-news

At this point, I’d rather just read The Walking Dead graphic novels than watch the show.

I’m really bitter about Heartthrob and Love You To Death. 😦

So good, in fact, that she hears things that Mattes and Clary never could – information that is passed in murmurs when flocks of pigeons gather … murmurs that are the words of the dead.

In this way, Beka learns of someone in the Lower City who has overturned the power structure of the underworld and is terrorizing its citizens into submission and silence. Beka’s magical listening talent is the only way for the Provost’s Dogs to find out the identity of this brutal new underlord, for the dead are beyond fear. And the ranks of the dead will be growing if the Dogs can’t stop a crime wave the likes of which has never been seen. Luckily for the people of the Lower City, the new puppy is a true terrier!
